Ghana has advised its citizens to exercise caution when traveling to Mexico following heightened security concerns in several states.
The advisory follows a security operation on 22nd February 2026 by Mexican authorities that led to the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Foreign Affairs Ministry in a statement warned that the operation has prompted coordinated cartel retaliation across multiple regions, creating a volatile security environment.
Ghanaians are urged to avoid non-essential travel to the affected cities, which include Jalisco, Baja California, Colima, Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Oaxaca.
Reports indicate that unrest in these areas has involved armed clashes, vehicle arson, and road blockages, resulting in casualties and major disruption of daily life.
Ghanaian citizens in Mexico are encouraged to stay in contact with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington D.C., which is concurrently accredited to Mexico, for consular support. The embassy can be reached at +1 (202) 709 0568.
The government expressed solidarity with the authorities of Mexico and confidence in their ability to restore order.
