The Ghana Education Service (GES) has temporarily suspended academic activities at the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School following the building collapse.
The directive follows the tragic incident on Sunday, March 29, 2026, when a three-storey structure within the school’s premises suddenly gave way, trapping worshippers and other occupants inside.
Emergency teams from the Ghana National Fire Service, alongside other security and rescue agencies, worked through the night to pull survivors from the debris.
According to officials, 20 of the rescued victims sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at various health facilities, while the bodies of three deceased persons have been recovered. Authorities have yet to identify the victims.
Following a briefing with security officials on Monday, March 30, 2026, GES Director-General Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis said the service will assess the safety of the remaining structures on the school compound before allowing any academic activity to resume.
He explained that engineers and estate officials would be deployed to determine whether the other buildings are structurally sound.
“We are going to work with the regional and the national team… to ensure that the other structure is indeed fit for that purpose. If they are not, we will advise the students not to go into such areas,” he stated.
The collapse has raised concerns about the use of uncompleted or abandoned buildings within public institutions, with authorities now intensifying safety inspections across similar facilities to prevent future tragedies.
