Fifteen people, including eleven children, have died in a tragic boat accident near Kete Krachi in Ghana’s Oti Region, prompting an outpouring of grief from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP).
In a statement on October 13, 2025, the ministry extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, survivors, and the broader Kete Krachi community, describing the incident as a national tragedy.
“This heartbreaking incident, which has taken the lives of so many, especially innocent children whose promising futures were cut short, is indeed a national tragedy,” the statement said.
The ministry assured support for the affected families through relevant agencies and commended the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) and emergency response teams for their swift action and for initiating investigations into the cause of the accident.
MoGCSP called for urgent improvements in water safety, urging boat operators, community leaders, and local authorities to strictly enforce regulations, including the mandatory use of life jackets and preventing vessel overloading.
“We encourage the ongoing collaborative efforts aimed at ensuring accountability and implementing stronger safety measures to prevent future occurrences,” the release stated.
The ministry concluded by appealing for comfort and strength for the grieving families and the Kete Krachi community during this difficult time.
