The Ghana Armed Forces has been deployed to spearhead a nationwide post-flood recovery and clean-up operation following the devastating floods that affected parts of the country on June 29, 2026.
As part of the exercise, government says structures illegally erected within waterways and drainage reservations could be removed under a broader flood mitigation and resilience programme aimed at reducing the risk of future flooding.
Addressing the media on Friday, July 3, 2026, the Director -General of Joint Operations of the Ghana Armed Forces, Forster Okae-Yeboah, said the operation will involve the deployment of military personnel, engineering units and heavy-duty equipment to clear blocked drains, rivers, streams and other waterways obstructed by debris, silt, fallen trees and collapsed structures.
He explained that the exercise will also focus on restoring access to roads and other critical infrastructure damaged by the floods, while supporting sanitation and public health interventions to prevent outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
The nationwide operation forms part of the government’s emergency response to the recent floods and its broader efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and improve the country’s resilience to future extreme weather events.
