The government has announced a bold plan to phase out the double-track system in senior high schools by committing ¢1 billion from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) in the 2026 budget.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu disclosed the decision at the commissioning of new staff accommodation at Accra Girls’ Senior High School.
He said the investment would complete stalled projects such as classroom blocks, dormitories, and assembly halls to allow all students to return to a single-track system.
Quoting President Mahama, the Minister noted, “We remain committed to ending the double-track system as our contribution to improving the quality of senior high school education.”
“He has directed the Minister of Finance to make an allocation of one billion Ghana cedis, dedicated to managing the transition and responding to the challenges of the transition.”
Mr. Iddrisu also reaffirmed that the Free Senior High School policy will not be scrapped but rather strengthened through infrastructure expansion and digital learning solutions to improve literacy and numeracy.
“Free Senior High School has come to stay,” he said, stressing that government’s priority is to make it more sustainable and effective.
