A swift response from firefighters in the Ahafo Region averted a major disaster after a fire broke out at the Kwapong Nursing and Midwifery Training College on Friday morning, October 31.
According to a statement from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Kukuom Fire Station received a distress call at 7:12 a.m. and arrived at the scene by 7:30 a.m.
Reinforcements from the Goaso Municipal Fire Station followed shortly after, and the combined team managed to bring the blaze under control by 8:45 a.m. The fire was completely extinguished at 10:26 a.m.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire started in one of the rooms on the first floor of a one-storey dormitory block and spread to six adjoining rooms.
The incident destroyed the roof, ceiling, furniture, books, beds, and personal belongings of students. Two fire extinguishers on the affected floor also exploded during the blaze.
However, firefighters successfully salvaged the ground floor of the building, and no casualties were reported.
The Ahafo Regional PRO of the GNFS, Adawu George, said investigations are ongoing to determine the actual cause of the fire.
The incident has reignited calls for stricter fire safety compliance and regular inspections in schools and training institutions across the region.
