The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that funding for the construction of a 176-kilometre, six-lane expressway linking Ghana’s two largest cities, Accra and Kumasi, has been secured.

According to the Finance Minister, an amount of US$1.7 billion has already been ring-fenced at the Bank of Ghana to support the major road infrastructure project.

Dr. Forson, in a statement shared on his Facebook page, said the expressway is expected to transform road transportation between the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions by improving travel times, enhancing road safety, and reducing transportation costs.

He said the project forms part of government’s broader efforts to expand critical infrastructure and improve connectivity between major economic centres across the country.

The Finance Minister noted that the completion of the expressway will provide a faster and safer alternative for commuters and businesses that rely heavily on the Accra-Kumasi corridor, which remains one of Ghana’s busiest transport routes.

He added that the investment is expected to boost economic activity by facilitating the movement of goods and people between the two cities.

The Accra-Kumasi highway has long been a key focus of successive governments due to increasing traffic volumes, frequent congestion, and safety concerns along sections of the route.

The proposed six-lane expressway is expected to address some of these challenges while supporting Ghana’s long-term infrastructure development agenda.
