Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament Samuel Nartey George has attributed Ghana’s narrow 1-0 victory over Panama in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener to improved tactical leadership, arguing that the Black Stars’ historical inconsistencies have often stemmed from poor in-game management.
Speaking in Parliament, the MP said the match demonstrated a clear difference in Ghana’s approach under head coach Carlos Queiroz, particularly his ability to influence the game through timely tactical adjustments.
He contrasted Ghana’s slow start with the decisive second-half response that ultimately secured victory in stoppage time.
“The changes he made, the effect it had on the game — that is something we have lacked for a few years,” he said.
“And I am happy to see that today we have a coach who can change the game mid-game with his tactical formation.”
Ghana endured a difficult opening phase of the match as Panama controlled proceedings early on, with goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi making several important saves to keep the Black Stars in contention.
However, tactical substitutions by Queiroz, including the withdrawal of captain Jordan Ayew, shifted the momentum of the game.
The changes culminated in a dramatic late winner in the 95th minute, when Antoine Semenyo set up Brandon Thomas-Asante, who assisted Caleb Yirenkyi for the decisive goal.
The MP also used the opportunity to remind Parliament of Ghana’s strong footballing history against top-ranked nations, referencing past World Cup performances against teams such as the Czech Republic and the United States.
He said those historic achievements should serve as motivation ahead of Ghana’s upcoming Group L clash against England.
