Ghana has called for stronger international cooperation, technological innovation and strategic investment to support Africa’s transition towards clean and sustainable energy.

The call was made by Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Mr Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, who represented President John Dramani Mahama at the opening of the U.S.-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit held in Accra.

Addressing the three-day summit, Mr Kofi-Buah stressed the need for African countries to deepen partnerships and invest in the infrastructure and expertise required to harness nuclear energy as part of the continent’s long-term energy strategy.

He also advocated the establishment of an African Nuclear Talent and Diaspora Network to connect governments, universities, technical institutions, regulatory bodies, industry players and African nuclear professionals across the world.

According to him, such a network would help strengthen the continent’s human capital base and facilitate knowledge sharing and technical collaboration in the nuclear energy sector.

The summit brings together policymakers, industry leaders and nuclear energy experts from Africa and beyond to explore practical approaches to developing end-to-end talent pipelines, strengthening regulatory systems and deploying advanced civil nuclear technologies across the continent.

The discussions are also focused on building the institutional and technical capacity needed to support the responsible development of nuclear energy and ensure its safety, security and sustainability.

Mr Kofi-Buah reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to pursuing secure and clean energy solutions as part of efforts to accelerate industrialisation, promote inclusive economic growth and strengthen long-term energy security.

He said Ghana’s participation in the summit reflects the country’s determination to contribute to Africa’s emerging nuclear energy agenda while pursuing partnerships that can support sustainable development and improve access to reliable power.
