A fire outbreak on Wednesday night, May 28, 2025, destroyed a total of 33 rooms at two popular beach resorts in the Ellembelle District of Ghana’s Western Region — Maaha Beach Resort and Vision Beach Resort.
The fire is reported to have started around 7 p.m. in the kitchen area of Vision Beach Resort.
It rapidly spread through the largely wooden structure, consuming 15 rooms before extending to parts of the adjacent Maaha Beach Resort, where an additional 18 rooms were destroyed.
Confirming the extent of the damage, Ellembelle District Fire Commander DO2 Mark Hamilton told Citi News that no lives were lost, and the affected rooms at Maaha Beach Resort were unoccupied at the time.
“For Maaha Beach, 18 rooms were affected. For Vision Resort, 15 rooms were affected. There were no casualties. As we speak, the situation is under control. The rooms that were affected had no occupants. Maaha is operational,” he stated.
The Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly to the emergency after receiving a distress call at 7:59 p.m., arriving at the scene within five minutes.
“There was no issue with the fire tender from Ghana Gas — in fact, that was the first one dispatched and it arrived in under four minutes,” DO2 Hamilton clarified, contradicting earlier reports suggesting a delay or non-intervention by the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant team.
“We later called for a second pump from another station to assist, so we had two pumps on site,” he clarified.
Although the fire has since been brought under control, the incident has raised serious concerns among tourism stakeholders in the area, especially as both resorts are major attractions in the Western Region.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are underway. Authorities have yet to determine the total cost of the damage.
