President John Dramani Mahama visited the 37 Military Hospital’s Emergency Ward on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, to receive a briefing on the situation and meet with potential recruits injured during a tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.
The incident occurred during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) 2025/2026 recruitment exercise when a surge of applicants breached security protocols around 6:20 a.m., resulting in six deaths and 28 injuries, 12 of which are reported in critical condition, with five admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Accompanied by the Acting Defence Minister and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), President Mahama extended condolences to the bereaved families and expressed concern for the injured.
Speaking on the tragedy, he said, “As they opened the gate, they all rushed in and some fell down, causing a stampede which led to six women dead and about 12 in critical condition. The heartbreaking news from the military is that six young women, who had come forward simply to serve their country, lost their lives in this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the 12 others who are still in critical condition.”

President Mahama described the loss as “heartbreaking” and emphasized that the nation mourns with the families of the victims.
He also called for a full and independent investigation to determine the causes of the tragedy and ensure that stronger safety protocols are put in place for future recruitment exercises.

Following the visit, the GAF confirmed that medical teams were working to stabilize the injured while the ongoing recruitment exercise has been temporarily suspended.
The temporary halt will allow authorities to review safety procedures and prevent further loss of life.
