The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has earned praise from healthcare providers for ensuring timely payment of claims, a move many say has boosted the financial stability of hospitals nationwide.
During a working visit to the Western Region, the Medical Director of Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Dr. Habbib Ahmed, commended the NHIA’s performance, noting that nearly 90 percent of the hospital’s patients are NHIS members.

He also lauded the donation of dialysis machines and appealed for more to support the government’s Mahama Cares initiative for Non-Communicable Diseases.
Dr. Bampoe, addressing hospital management and staff, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC), transparency, and financial sustainability.
He revealed that in August 2025 alone, the NHIA disbursed about GHS 400 million in claims to health facilities nationwide, while also announcing a reviewed service tariff set to take effect soon.

Warning facilities against illegal charges for NHIS-covered services, he cited recent enforcement actions at Akim Oda Government Hospital as proof of the Authority’s zero-tolerance policy.
He further stressed that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund—branded as Mahama Cares—will cover dialysis and other NCD services once fully operational.
The CEO also pledged to improve staff welfare, tackle fraudulent claims, and strengthen operational efficiency, while introducing initiatives such as a Gender Desk, a Learning and Development Portal, and the Pulpit Initiative to deepen stakeholder engagement.

Dr. Bampoe’s visit, which also included a meeting with the Paramount Chief of Essikado Traditional Council, underscored the NHIA’s drive to strengthen collaboration, ensure responsive leadership, and position the Scheme as a key driver of accessible and sustainable healthcare in Ghana.
