Some students in Ghana’s Senior High Schools have been caught using government-issued tablets for non-academic purposes, including accessing pornographic content, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, November 27, the minister noted that of the 1.3 million tablets distributed under the Free Senior High School program, about 980,000 are already deployed, but many are not fully customised for academic use.
“I inherited a contract worth about $337 million where some 1.3 million tablets were to be distributed across the country… My attention was drawn to the fact that many of the devices are not customised and the students are using them for other purposes, including pornography, which is not acceptable,” he said.
Mr. Iddrisu stressed that the government is taking the issue seriously and plans to introduce stricter restrictions to ensure the devices are used solely for learning.
The tablets are intended to support digital education, facilitate curriculum access, and prepare students to be globally competitive.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding the educational purpose of digital tools while expanding access to modern learning resources nationwide.
