Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that Cabinet has approved the immediate absorption of 6,200 teachers into the Ghana Education Service (GES), ending months of uncertainty over unpaid salaries.
The announcement came after teachers staged demonstrations at the Ghana Education Service and Ministry of Finance, demanding payment for their months of unpaid service.
Speaking at the 2025 Triennale of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said the move reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring trained educators are fully engaged to improve learning outcomes nationwide.
“A few weeks ago, myself and Chief Director received a petition from some teachers who are unhappy with the government over their unending work for a number of months without their pay. I’m happy to announce that Cabinet has given approval for the 6,200 teachers to be absorbed. We’ll begin the process in due course.
So those 6,200 teachers, I think I can speak for both ministries in this matter. Cabinet gave the finance approval to via budget and spend upon about 1.1 billion Ghana cedis to absorb a category of health workers and teachers. The process will start soon and therefore no more picketing,” he stated.
The government has promised that the teachers will receive back pay, ending the months-long dispute and eliminating the need for further protests.
