The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has unanimously recommended support for President John Dramani Mahama’s candidacy for the African Union (AU) Chairmanship in 2027.
The decision was made during the Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers, held on December 12, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria. It underscores ECOWAS’s intent to safeguard and advance its interests in regional and international organizations.
The Council noted Ghana’s pivotal role in the region and highlighted the importance of supporting the candidacy of a key member state to ensure ECOWAS maintains influence at the continental level.
The formal adoption of the Declaration of Support is expected from the Authority of Heads of State and Government, solidifying ECOWAS’s collective endorsement of President Mahama for the AU Chairmanship.
This move positions Ghana, under President Mahama’s leadership, at the forefront of Africa’s continental governance agenda for 2027.
