The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has hailed the successful conduct of the Akwatia by-election, describing it as a collective achievement of all stakeholders who contributed to its peaceful and transparent outcome.
The by-election, necessitated by the passing of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, was won by the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo, who polled 18,199 votes. His closest challenger, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, secured 15,235 votes, while Patrick Owusu of the Liberal Progressive Party (LPP) managed 82 votes.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 4, 2025, and signed by its Regional Chairman, Stephen Ampem Darko-Koranteng, the GJA praised the Electoral Commission for its professional handling of the polls, noting that its efficiency boosted public confidence in the process.
The association also applauded the security services, particularly the Ghana Police Service, for their vigilance in protecting journalists and maintaining law and order before, during, and after voting.
The statement noted, “We further acknowledge the political parties, their candidates, and supporters for demonstrating political maturity and a firm commitment to democratic principles. The GJA equally appreciates the efforts of civil society groups, election observers, and our colleague journalists who provided timely, factual, and balanced coverage that enhanced public confidence in the process.”
The Association reaffirmed its dedication to promoting responsible journalism anchored on peace, transparency, and accountability as part of its contribution to Ghana’s democratic journey.
