The Ghana Police Service has temporarily closed the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and withdrawn its officers following violent clashes with residents.
The unrest erupted on Sunday, September 21, 2025, after the death of Bright Kena, also known as D-ball, who had been arrested for unlawful entry and theft.
Police confirmed he died while receiving treatment at the Kukurantumi Community Hospital.
Enraged youth stormed the police station and barracks, pelting the facilities with stones and attempting to set them ablaze. A reinforcement team was dispatched to restore calm.
The Inspector-General of Police subsequently ordered the station’s closure and the withdrawal of all personnel from the town.
The Eastern Regional Police Command says the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have launched separate probes into Kena’s death. Video footage of the attack is also being reviewed to identify perpetrators.
“The perpetrators will be identified, arrested and brought to justice,” the statement assured, while urging residents to use lawful means to resolve grievances.
