The family of the late Ghanaian highlife icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has confirmed that the one-week observance of his passing will take place on Saturday, August 30, 2025, in Accra, with the final funeral rites to follow in Kumasi.
According to the head of the Ekuona Royal Family of Nsuta, Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu, the decision was made in consultation with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who was formally informed of the musician’s death at the Manhyia Palace.
“As a royal and son of the Ashanti Kingdom, it was important we first reported the news to His Royal Majesty before making any public announcements,” Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu said.
“Otumfuo graciously received us and made it clear that Lumba must return home for his final rest. So while the one-week celebration will be in Accra, the funeral will be held in Kumasi.”
He added that the family is currently considering a more spacious venue for the Accra observance due to the massive turnout at the candlelight vigil held on Saturday, August 2, at Independence Square.
The upcoming funeral will pay homage to Lumba not only as a musical legend but also as a proud royal of the Ashanti Kingdom. “We are planning something truly befitting.
Lumba was not just a national treasure—he was a royal son,” Abusuapanyin said.
The family has also assured the Ga Traditional Council will be officially informed, in respect of protocols governing events within the capital.
Meanwhile, another candlelight vigil is scheduled to take place at Heroes’ Park at the Kumasi Sports Stadium on Saturday, August 9, as part of the national mourning activities.
Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025, after a brief illness at the Bank Hospital in Accra. His death has left an immense void in Ghana’s music landscape.
