The management of Class Media Group (CMG) has strongly condemned the alleged assault on one of its journalists by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) during coverage of a fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market in the Central Region.
In a statement dated Monday, January 5, 2026, CMG’s Chief Executive Officer, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as a threat to press freedom and the safety of journalists in Ghana.
The journalist involved, Samuel Addo, was reportedly carrying out his lawful duty of covering the fire outbreak when he was physically confronted by some fire service officers who allegedly attempted to stop him from filming the scene on Monday, January 5, 2026.
Videos circulating on social media show the journalist being manhandled amid a tense and chaotic environment, with voices heard shouting at him as the confrontation unfolded.
In the statement, Alhaji Seidu Agongo said such incidents “not only threaten press freedom and the safety of journalists but also undermine Ghana’s credibility and standing as a champion of media rights.”
He called on the relevant authorities to conduct a swift and impartial investigation into the matter to establish the facts and ensure accountability, stressing that journalists must be protected while performing their professional duties.
CMG also urged all parties to remain calm as the matter is addressed, reaffirming the company’s commitment to responsible journalism and the protection of media practitioners.
