The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will today, Tuesday, October 28, 2025, officially launch the 60th anniversary celebration of the Ghana Cedi at the Accra International Conference Centre, marking six decades since the national currency was first introduced.
The event, themed “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience,” is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with President John Dramani Mahama attending as the Special Guest of Honour.
The Cedi, first introduced on July 19, 1965, marked Ghana’s decisive move toward economic independence after gaining political freedom. Over the years, it has undergone several policy reforms and redesigns, serving as both a measure of the nation’s economic journey and a symbol of its resilience.
The central bank says the Cedi@60 celebration is an opportunity to reflect on Ghana’s monetary evolution, foster national pride, and renew confidence in the Cedi as a cornerstone of economic stability and national identity.
The year-long programme will include a range of activities such as public education campaigns, regional roadshows, and youth-focused competitions in art, music, and essay writing aimed at deepening financial literacy and public engagement.
A key feature of the celebration will be a Currency Conference that will bring together representatives from international central banks, academia, and the private sector to discuss Ghana’s monetary past, present, and future.
According to the Bank of Ghana, the milestone is not only a commemoration of history but also a reaffirmation of its resolve to maintain monetary stability and safeguard the integrity of the Cedi for future generations.
