Finance Minister Dr. Cassel Ato Forson has stressed the importance of maintaining continuity at the Bank of Ghana, warning that frequent board disruptions after elections are undermining its operations.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Dr. Forson said the central bank must function independently of political transitions.
“Regardless of a change in government, the central bank, being the centre of banking for Ghana, must run until the time the government of the day is ready to change the board,” he said.
Reflecting on his own experience as a former board member, Dr. Forson revealed that he stopped attending meetings after a government change, believing his role was linked to the Finance Minister’s representation.
He noted it took seven months before the board was fully reconstituted, highlighting the disruption such delays can cause.
The Minister urged that the Bank of Ghana be given the stability and focus necessary to carry out its mandate effectively, emphasizing that its operations should not be held hostage to political shifts.
