Two people have lost their lives and five others have been injured following a devastating road traffic collision involving four vehicles at Birimso Bridge along the Accra–Kumasi Highway (N6) in the Eastern Region.
The accident involved a fuel tanker, an STC passenger bus bearing registration number GS-7050-22, a Mitsubishi pick-up with registration number GE-8602-17, and a KIA Sorento with registration number GT-8601-14.
The impact of the collision sparked a massive fire, engulfing three of the vehicles. The fuel tanker, the STC bus and the Mitsubishi pick-up were completely burnt, while the KIA Sorento suffered severe fire damage.
Firefighters from the Bunso Fire Station, supported by a crew from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station, rushed to the scene and battled the blaze until it was brought under control, preventing it from spreading further.
Officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service also responded to the scene to manage traffic and support emergency operations as rescue efforts continued.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, seven people were involved in the crash, made up of five men and two women. Two victims were pronounced dead, while the five survivors sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured were transported to the Osiem and Kibi Government hospitals for treatment.
Although firefighters successfully extinguished the flames and carried out mop-up operations to secure the area, authorities are yet to determine what caused the crash. Investigations are underway to establish the circumstances leading to the fatal incident.
