Betterland Ghana Limited, a large-scale mining company operating at Gwira Banso in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region, has denied allegations that it is engaged in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, within a forest reserve.

The company said reports by some media outlets suggesting that it was undertaking illegal mining operations were false, misleading, and had the potential to damage its reputation and relationships with stakeholders.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 3, 2026, and signed by Management, Betterland Ghana Limited stated that it is a legally registered large-scale mining company with duly acquired concessions and does not engage in irresponsible mining practices.

The company clarified that it has not commenced commercial mining operations at its concession but is currently undertaking expanded exploration activities.

According to the statement, claims that the company was mining illegally followed a press conference organised by some community members, after which some media publications allegedly created the impression that Betterland Ghana was degrading the environment and affecting the forest reserve.

Management expressed concern that some media organisations published the allegations without adequately verifying the facts, arguing that the reports had negatively affected the company’s image among local and international partners.

The company challenged the media houses involved to provide evidence and authenticate video footage they claimed was taken from the Betterland Ghana concession at Gwira Banso.

Betterland Ghana acknowledged the existence of illegal small-scale mining activities in areas surrounding its concession but stressed that the company itself was not involved in such activities.

It maintained that its exploration activities have not affected nearby natural resources and reiterated that it remains committed to complying with Ghana’s mining laws and regulatory requirements.

The company further stated that when commercial mining eventually begins, its processing facilities would be established outside the forest reserve in accordance with applicable mining regulations.

Betterland Ghana has consequently called on the media organisations responsible for the reports to retract what it described as inaccurate publications and reaffirmed its commitment to responsible mining practices and sustainable operations.
