Police in the Assin North District of the Central Region have rescued a young man from an attempted lynching after he was accused of trying to attack a cocoa farmer at Assin Yaw Attah.

The suspect, believed to be in his early 20s, suffered multiple injuries after he was beaten by residents who accused him of confronting a 19-year-old cocoa farmer, identified only as Baba, on his farm with a stick.

According to residents, the farmer raised an alarm, drawing community members to the scene where the suspect was overpowered, tied to a pole and assaulted by the angry crowd.

Police officers from the Assin Breku Police Station intervened following a distress call and transported the injured suspect to the Assin Praso Presbyterian Hospital, where he is receiving treatment under police guard.

The Assin North District Police Commander, Superintendent Eric Yao Avudzi, condemned the act of mob justice and reminded residents that suspects must be handed over to law enforcement authorities rather than subjected to violence.

He revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the suspect may be suffering from a mental health condition, citing inconsistent responses during interrogation and reports from residents that he had been exhibiting unusual behaviour in the community.

Police have launched investigations into both the alleged attack on the farmer and the assault on the suspect, while efforts are underway to identify the man and arrest those involved in the mob action.
