Government has deployed the Ghana Armed Forces to Bawku and surrounding areas, transitioning from peacekeeping to peace enforcement following a renewed escalation of violence.
The decision, announced in a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Sunday, July 27, is aimed at maintaining law and order and enforcing stricter curfews to safeguard lives and property.
“The Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, as we intensify curfews to ensure public safety. We assure the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property.”
As part of the intensified measures, the Interior Ministry has reviewed the curfew hours for Bawku Municipality and its adjoining communities in the Upper East Region.
Effective Sunday, July 27, 2025, the new curfew will run daily from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. until further notice.
The government acknowledged the recent mediation efforts led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, with the support of Nayiri and Zugraana, noting that significant progress had been made toward resolving the conflict.
However, it said the latest killings had compelled authorities to take stronger action to protect all parties and sustain the peace process.
Government has assured the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary steps to protect lives and property.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as efforts continue to restore lasting peace in the area.
While the government expressed regret over the inconvenience the intervention may cause, it reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to restoring peace and stability in Bawku and other affected areas.
