The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has concluded his months-long mediation in the Bawku chieftaincy crisis and is set to present his final report and proposals to President John Dramani Mahama in the next few days.
In a final joint meeting at the Manhyia Palace, delegations representing the Mamprusis and the Kusasis met face-to-face for the first time under the mediation process. The discussions, according to Manhyia, were cordial, with both sides affirming their shared identity and the need for peace.
A press release from the Manhyia Palace noted that both groups “emphasised the fact that they are one people who have no reason to be at war with each other.”
Otumfuo, who has spent months listening to both factions separately before bringing them together, urged the leaders to begin preparing their followers for a permanent end to hostilities. He reminded them that peace was essential regardless of the mediation outcome.
“He urged the leaders to start preparing the minds of their supporters to be prepared to put an end permanently to violence and disorder in their communities,” the statement said.
The Asantehene expressed hope that once he submits his report, President Mahama will “act expeditiously and convene a formal meeting of all interested parties to announce the outcome of the mediation mission.”
The report is expected to outline recommendations aimed at bringing lasting stability to the Bawku traditional area.
