A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Barima Sarpong, has appealed to the party’s national and Ashanti Regional leadership to engage stakeholders in Afigya Sekyere East Constituency in an honest dialogue to resolve recent tensions surrounding the constituency’s executive elections.
In a statement dated July 18, 2026, Mr. Sarpong called for calm, discipline, and unity, stressing that the party’s interests must come ahead of individual positions.
He said the recent developments in the constituency, including concerns over the electoral album used for the executive elections and the subsequent decision by the NPP’s National Steering Committee to annul the process, had created tension among party members.
According to him, the situation was further heightened after the newly elected executives and the Ashanti Regional leadership responded to the decision in ways that reflected their commitment to the constituency, leading to disagreements and disturbances that resulted in arrests.
“Those events alone should tell us that something must be done, not to apportion blame, but to restore calm,” Mr. Sarpong stated.
He appealed to the NPP national and regional leadership to work closely with constituency stakeholders, arguing that greater consultation would help prevent misunderstandings and strengthen trust at the grassroots level.
“Afigya Sekyere East is part of Ashanti Region, and the Regional leadership understands the local dynamics best.
If we create more room for national and regional executives to engage first before major decisions, we will avoid confusion and build greater trust,” he said.
Mr. Sarpong also referenced the legacy of prominent personalities from the constituency, including the late former legislator Victor Owusu and former Chief of Staff Hon. Kwadwo Okyere Mpiani, saying their contributions to leadership, wisdom, and unity should inspire current members.
He urged the NPP National Executives, Ashanti Regional Executives, and constituency stakeholders to meet and agree on a roadmap that addresses the concerns surrounding the electoral album, determines the way forward for the executive elections, and restores peace within the constituency.
“The agenda should be simple: review the concerns around the electoral album together, agree on a clear, peaceful roadmap for the constituency, and reaffirm our commitment to party discipline in a way that heals and unites,” he said.
Mr. Sarpong cautioned all sides against media exchanges and personal differences, emphasizing that the party’s unity ahead of the 2028 general elections should remain the priority.
“Let us allow wisdom to control power.
Let us choose peace over pride, and unity over division.
Afigya Sekyere East deserves better.
The NPP deserves better,” he added.
