Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been appointed to a high-level international task force working toward a peaceful resolution of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
The appointment, announced by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on October 30, 2025, places Speaker Bagbin among a select group of eight global parliamentarians drawn from all six IPU geopolitical regions.
In his appointment letter, the IPU President and Secretary-General, Martin Chungong, described Bagbin as a leader whose “integrity, impartiality, and ability to build trust with all parties” make him well suited for the delicate mediation role.
Formed in March 2022, the IPU Task Force has served as one of the few remaining platforms fostering dialogue between legislators from Ukraine and Russia.
Since its inception, the group has held over a dozen meetings, including missions to Kyiv and Moscow, and continues to facilitate exchanges during IPU Assemblies every six months.
Speaker Bagbin is expected to join upcoming meetings, participate in hearings, and engage directly with political leaders from both countries in pursuit of peace. His inclusion, according to the IPU, brings renewed energy and experience to the task force’s mission.
The Parliamentary Service of Ghana described the appointment as a recognition of Bagbin’s longstanding role in peace-building and parliamentary diplomacy across Africa and beyond.
