Judges’ conduct today will shape future credibility of Ghana’s judiciary – Apostle Nyamekye

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr. Eric Nyamekye, has cautioned that the credibility and public confidence in Ghana’s judiciary in the years ahead will largely depend on the character, integrity, and conduct of judges serving today.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service in Accra on Friday, July 31, to mark the 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court of Ghana, Apostle Nyamekye said the decisions and actions of members of the bench would leave a lasting impact on the nation’s justice system.

The celebration, held on the theme “Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present and Defining the Future,” brought together judges, lawyers, public officials, and other stakeholders to reflect on the Supreme Court’s history and role in Ghana’s democracy.

Apostle Nyamekye stressed that while legal expertise and technical knowledge are essential for judicial work, they must be complemented by strong moral values, conscience, and a commitment to truth.

He reminded judges that their decisions often determine the fate of individuals, institutions, and society at large, and therefore their integrity must remain beyond question.

“As judges adjudicating on behalf of God, in passing judgments and determining people’s fate, in determining the truth in every matter, your integrity should not be in question at all,” he said.

The Pentecost leader urged members of the bench to allow conscience and time-tested values to guide their judgments, warning against situations where personal interests, ambitions, or external pressures could influence judicial decisions.

He explained that compromising one’s conscience often begins with small actions but can gradually weaken moral discipline and lead to serious ethical failures.

Apostle Nyamekye further noted that values and principles serve as a foundation for making difficult decisions, particularly in positions of great responsibility.

He said the legacy of the current generation of judges would determine how future generations perceive Ghana’s justice system, urging judges, Christians, and all public servants to uphold integrity in their various roles.

The thanksgiving service formed part of activities marking the 150-year journey of Ghana’s Supreme Court, with participants offering prayers for wisdom, strength, and continued fairness in the administration of justice.
