President John Dramani Mahama has revoked the appointment of Anne Sansa Daly from the Board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), following mounting concerns about her lack of a valid medical license to practise in Ghana.
A statement dated May 23, from the Presidency confirmed the nomination of Prof. Dr. (Med) Ernest Yorke as Daly’s replacement, with immediate effect.
According to the statement, the necessary steps are being taken to facilitate Prof. Yorke’s swearing-in in the coming days.
Prof. Yorke, who currently serves as the Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), was elected to the position during the Association’s 65th Annual General Meeting held in Takoradi on November 11, 2023.
He is widely respected within the medical community and is seen as a competent and credible choice to join the NHIA Board.
While the official communication did not detail the reasons for Daly’s removal, credible sources suggest that the decision was triggered by backlash from both the public and health professionals regarding her representation as a medical doctor despite not holding a local practicing license.
Several stakeholders in the health sector had questioned Daly’s qualifications and raised concerns over her suitability to serve on the board of such a critical public health institution, hence the revocation.
