The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has declared the Akwatia by-election a “model of calm and order,” despite minor disturbances earlier in the day.
Touring polling centers on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the IGP lauded the professionalism of security personnel and the discipline of voters. He noted that the Electoral Commission’s (EC) processes were proceeding without major hitches across the 119 polling stations.
He revealed that all regional commanders, alongside members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), had been deployed to the constituency to reinforce security. Their presence, he said, underscores the police service’s commitment to a transparent and peaceful vote.
“I am very satisfied with the performance of my men on the ground. This election is such that we have all regional commanders, all POMAB members taking part on the ground. They are all on the field and working with the personnel. Everything is going on very well,” IGP Yohuno told reporters.
The by-election, triggered by the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, has drawn national attention as the governing NDC’s Bernard Baidoo faces off against the opposition NPP’s Solomon Asumadu. A total of 52,328 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots.
Though the day began with a chaotic confrontation between NDC Vice Chairman Sofo Azorka and his NPP counterpart Osman Masawudu at the lorry station, police swiftly intervened to calm tensions. Since then, voting has continued largely without incident.
The IGP assured that every effort will be made to protect the integrity of the polls and urged political actors to avoid provocative actions.
