AIT President calls for ‘Sovereign Triple-L’ mindset as AI reshapes world of work

The President of the Accra Institute of Technology (AIT), Professor Clement K. Dzidonu, has called for a shift in how individuals approach education and professional development as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies continue to transform the world of work.

Professor Dzidonu says graduation should no longer be seen as the end of learning but as the beginning of a lifelong commitment to developing new knowledge, skills and capabilities.

He is advocating what he describes as the “Sovereign Triple-L” – the Sovereign Lifelong Learner – which requires individuals to take personal responsibility for continuously renewing and expanding their capabilities.

“You went to university. You acquired knowledge. You graduated. You entered a profession. And for many years, much of what you had learned remained relevant to what you were called upon to do. That world is disappearing.”

According to him, rapid advances in AI, changing technologies and evolving professional practices are altering both the nature of work and the capabilities required to remain relevant.

He said university qualifications remain important but cannot guarantee that knowledge acquired at graduation will remain sufficient throughout a person’s career.

“The Sovereign Triple-L is not simply someone who keeps taking courses, accumulates certificates, or waits until an employer sends them for training. The Sovereign Triple-L is a Sovereign Lifelong Learner — a person who takes ownership of continuing learning.”

Professor Dzidonu said individuals must continually assess what they know, what they can do, what they need to learn and what they may need to unlearn or relearn.

He also introduced the concept of SEEK, representing Skills, Expertise, Experience, Knowledge and Know-how, and described the SEEK-Gap as the changing distance between an individual’s existing capabilities and those increasingly required to remain effective and relevant.

He linked this to the paradox, “The More You Know, the Less You Know,” explaining that the statement reflects the constantly expanding frontier of knowledge, skills and professional capabilities.

“The future will increasingly belong to those who remain capable of learning what tomorrow requires.”

On AI, Professor Dzidonu urged individuals to use the technology to extend their capabilities without surrendering human judgement and independent thinking.

“The more useful question is not merely, ‘Will AI make what I learned obsolete?’ It is: ‘How will I use AI, technology, experience, reflection and continuous learning to keep renewing what I know and what I am capable of doing?’”

He said the Sovereign Triple-L mindset should also be guided by what he calls the Opportunity–Possibility–Difference (OPD) Perspective.

This involves seeing change and challenges as opportunities to learn, exploring the new capabilities that can emerge from those opportunities, and ultimately using those capabilities to create value and make a meaningful difference.

Professor Dzidonu stressed that the concept is relevant not only to graduates but also to students, professionals, entrepreneurs, educators and business leaders.

“What made an individual capable yesterday may not necessarily be sufficient tomorrow.”

He urged individuals to respond to technological change through continuous learning and capability development rather than fear or passive dependence on technology.

“Do not allow graduation to become the end of your learning journey. Let it become the beginning of a new one.”
