Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo has announced her intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries again, reversing her earlier indication that she would pursue opportunities beyond the constituency.
In a statement dated Thursday, October 22, 2026, the former MP said her decision followed considerable reflection and consultations with party leadership, executives and other stakeholders.
“After considerable reflection, extensive consultation and broad based engagement with party leadership and executives and guided by my own conviction and unwavering loyalty to the Principles and Values of our political tradition, I formally announce my intention to once again present myself for consideration as the New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency when the party announces the timetable and guidelines for the parliamentary primaries,” she said.
Mrs. Safo had earlier indicated that she intended to pursue opportunities outside the constituency. However, she said further reflection had strengthened her resolve to continue representing the people of Dome-Kwabenya in Parliament.
“Earlier, I had indicated my intention to pursue opportunities beyond the constituency. However, upon deeper reflection, I have come to appreciate, that there is no greater honour or responsibility than serving and representing the interests and aspirations of the over two hundred thousand constituents of our beloved constituency in parliament,” she stated.
She said her decision was informed by her commitment to the constituency and her belief that more work remained to be done to advance its development.
“My decision to return to contest, is informed by my enduring commitment to the people of Dome-Kwabenya and my conviction that there remains much, to contribute to the development of our constituency and the advancement of our shared aspirations,” she added.
Mrs. Safo represented Dome-Kwabenya in Parliament for 12 years, from 2013 to 2025, after winning the seat in the 2012 general election. In her statement, she recalled that the NPP inherited about 35,000 votes in the constituency when she first became its parliamentary candidate.
She said the party’s votes increased to 63,373 in the 2012 election, 65,488 in 2016 and 75,041 in 2020.
“These achievements are not mine alone. They reflect the dedication, sacrifice and commitment of every party member, supporter and constituent who believed in our shared vision for Dome-Kwabenya,” she said.
During her political career, Mrs. Safo also served in government, including as Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection. She was later appointed Minister of State in charge of Public Procurement.
Her parliamentary career was also marked by controversy over her prolonged absence from Parliament in 2022, which led to disciplinary proceedings by the New Patriotic Party and a parliamentary committee inquiry.
Mrs. Safo said Dome-Kwabenya remained one of Ghana’s fastest-growing constituencies, with significant opportunities as well as development challenges.
She credited collaboration with residents, party faithful, community and religious leaders, and other stakeholders for progress made during her time as MP.
She also called on party members and constituents to engage in discussions about the constituency’s future with openness and mutual respect.
“I firmly believe, that the strength of our party lies in our unity, our shared values, and our collective willingness to work together in pursuit of our common purpose,” she said.
