President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons as Ghana prepares to mark its 70th Independence Anniversary.
The decision was taken in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution and followed consultation with the Council of State.
“Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, has, in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution and following consultation with the Council of State, exercised the prerogative of mercy to grant presidential pardon to Eight Hundred and Sixty-Three (863) convicted persons,” a statement from the Presidency said.
First offenders make up the largest group of beneficiaries, with 819 people granted outright release.
The presidential pardon also covers 13 convicted persons aged 70 years and above. They will receive outright release.
Six seriously ill convicted persons have also been granted outright release.
President Mahama has further approved the commutation of some sentences. Eleven death sentences will be commuted to life sentences, while six life sentences will be commuted to 20 years definite. Two persons under the special recommendation category will receive outright release.
Three cases are listed under petitions, while three others fall under the “Others” category.
The total number of beneficiaries under the presidential pardon is 863.
The decision forms part of activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.
“The grant of pardon is made in commemoration of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary, marking this significant milestone in the nation’s history with an act of mercy and national reflection,” the statement said.
The Presidency said the relevant state institutions have been directed to take the necessary steps to give effect to the President’s decision.
