Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has formally transmitted a request for the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and his chief of staff, Ernest Darko Akore, from the United States.
The announcement was made during the Government Accountability Series in Accra. Dr. Ayine stated, “I wish to take a moment to announce that I have formally transmitted the request for the extradition of former finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and his chef de cabinet, Mr. Ernest Darko Akore.”
The extradition request follows an investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) into alleged acts of corruption and corruption-related offences committed by Ofori-Atta and his associates.
Dr. Ayine confirmed that the request has been transmitted to the U.S. Department of Justice and is now subject to judicial review in the United States.
“The major announcement that I have this morning is in relation to an investigation conducted by the Economic and Organised Crime, which led to a very big recovery of a process of crime,” he added.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor has filed 78 charges against former Finance Minister Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta and seven others over alleged corruption and procurement-related offences tied to revenue assurance contracts awarded to Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).
The High Court charge sheet, filed on November 18, 2025, alleges that the group conspired to “directly or indirectly influenc[e] the procurement process to obtain an unfair advantage in the award of a procurement contract,” contrary to the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663).
Those charged include senior former officials of the Ghana Revenue Authority as well as executives of SML.
The OSP said its months-long investigation uncovered significant financial irregularities involving key officials who played central roles in awarding and overseeing the controversial contracts.
