Betty didn’t lose parliamentary seat due to incompetence – Afram Plains North NDC backs her for Women’s Organizer

The Afram Plains North Constituency Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have backed former Member of Parliament Betty Krosbi Mensah’s bid to become the party’s National Women’s Organizer.

The executives say Mensah’s record in office demonstrates her commitment to women’s empowerment, youth development and community transformation.

Their endorsement comes amid efforts to challenge claims that Mensah’s defeat in the 2024 parliamentary election was the result of poor performance as MP for Afram Plains North.

In a statement dated August 19, 2026, the constituency executives described such claims as “mischievous” and “misleading”.

“We consider such assertions mischievous, misleading and a disservice to the people of the constituency, especially considering the remarkable interventions Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah undertook during her tenure, at a time when the NDC was even in opposition,” they said.

The executives argued that an electoral defeat should not automatically be interpreted as a reflection of a politician’s performance.

They cited the NDC’s defeat in the 2016 general election, when former President John Dramani Mahama lost his bid for re-election, as an example. According to them, Mahama’s subsequent return to the presidency showed that electoral defeat does not necessarily erase a politician’s record or competence.

The constituency executives said Betty Krosbi Mensah demonstrated a practical approach to leadership during her time in Parliament.

They pointed to several interventions they said directly supported women and improved their livelihoods.

Among them were the donation of freezers to some branch women organisers and traders to help them establish and expand their businesses.

Mensah also provided loan facilities to branch women organisers in the constituency to support their businesses and livelihoods, according to the executives.

They further cited the provision of dryers to hairdressers and sewing machines to seamstresses as part of her efforts to equip women with the tools needed to grow their trades.

Her support, they said, extended to women facing financial and social difficulties.

The former MP reportedly paid hospital bills for women who needed medical assistance. She also provided financial and material support to widows and persons with disabilities.

The executives said Mensah also invested in the development of young women by sponsoring some to acquire vocational skills in areas such as hairdressing and dressmaking.

She also supported women pursuing secondary and tertiary education and facilitated ICT training for young women and the wider youth population.

The constituency executives believe these interventions demonstrate Mensah’s understanding of the practical challenges facing women at the grassroots.

They argued that women’s empowerment requires more than political promises. In their view, women also need access to skills, capital, equipment, education, healthcare and sustainable sources of income.

The executives also highlighted Mensah’s contribution to healthcare in Afram Plains North.

According to the statement, she provided an incubator, delivery beds and other hospital beds to the Presbyterian Hospital in Donkorkrom and other health facilities within the constituency.

They also credited her with helping to complete abandoned clinics at Faso Bator and Abotanso.

The executives said the clinics, which they noted were started under the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama in 2015, were completed to improve access to primary healthcare, particularly for women and children.

For the Afram Plains North executives, the record makes Betty Krosbi Mensah a strong candidate for the NDC’s National Women’s Organizer position.

They said the person who leads the party’s women’s wing must understand the realities of women at the grassroots and have the experience needed to address their concerns.

“Her record shows that she does not merely speak about women’s empowerment, she invests in women,” the executives stated.

They further argued that Mensah’s experience as an opposition MP gives her an understanding of how to deliver results even when resources are limited.

The executives believe that with greater responsibility and resources, she can extend the impact of her work beyond Afram Plains North.

They therefore urged NDC women organisers across the country to support her candidature.

According to them, the contest for National Women’s Organizer should not be based solely on personalities. It should also consider the experience, grassroots connection, compassion and proven record of each candidate.

They described Betty Krosbi Mensah as an experienced politician, a compassionate leader and a grassroots organiser with a record of supporting women.

“Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah is experienced. Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah is compassionate. Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah is a proven grassroots leader. Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah has a record of empowering women,” they said.
