The Minority in Parliament has criticised the government’s 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, describing it as uninspiring and lacking concrete measures to address the economic challenges facing Ghanaians.
Responding to the budget statement on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said the review failed to provide the level of transparency and accountability expected at the midpoint of the fiscal year.
The Effutu Member of Parliament argued that although Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson highlighted several achievements of the government, the statement lacked sufficient data and evidence to support many of the claims.
According to him, the review did not adequately account for actual government expenditure, payments made, or the implementation status of key policy programmes.
“Parliament and the Ghanaian people deserve to know exactly how public funds have been used.
You cannot simply announce payments without providing the details behind them,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated.
The Minority Leader further accused the government of relying on rhetoric rather than presenting practical solutions to address the country’s economic difficulties and the hardships confronting ordinary citizens.
He also raised concerns about the prevailing political environment, alleging that some individuals were being selectively targeted while the government claimed to be focused on managing the economy.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin questioned the government’s assertions of economic recovery, insisting that the improvements outlined in the Mid-Year Budget Review did not reflect the realities being experienced by many Ghanaians.
The Minority has therefore called on the government to provide greater transparency in the management of public finances and introduce policies that deliver tangible relief to households and businesses.
