The Minority in Parliament has criticised the handling of the reported EOCO operation involving Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin asking President John Dramani Mahama to rein in his appointees and ensure state institutions operate within the law.
Afenyo-Markin made the call on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, after a tense incident involving Baffour Awuah and security personnel believed to be from EOCO.
Baffour Awuah was at the High Court as counsel for senior nursing officer Salomey Awity Baffoe, who is facing a charge of abetment of crime linked to the alleged publication and circulation of false information.
The court was scheduled to hear Baffoe’s application for bail. However, the hearing was adjourned to September 24 after the prosecution requested more time to respond to the application.
After the proceedings, Baffour Awuah was reportedly approached by a woman believed to be an EOCO official and asked to accompany her to the agency.
The MP later said he questioned the basis of the attempted arrest and asked to see an arrest warrant. He said none was produced, after which he drove away from the court premises.
Footage of the incident showed a confrontation between security personnel and members of the MP’s legal team outside the court.
Reports indicate that the situation escalated into a physical confrontation before Baffour Awuah left the premises.
Against this backdrop, Afenyo-Markin challenged President Mahama to reflect on his record and the legacy he intends to leave behind.
“Mr. President, reflect on your legacy. You are left with almost just 2 years from exiting office. The question is, what would you tell Ghanaians when you are in your quiet moment? Can you proudly say, the second opportunity you were given by God, you used that chance to transform your country?” he asked.
He then directly addressed what he described as excesses by government officials.
“Watch these excesses, enough is enough. Call your appointees to order because this is not the Ghana we want,” Afenyo-Markin said.
The Minority Leader, however, stressed that his concerns should not be interpreted as opposition to accountability or the legitimate work of state institutions.
“We are not against accountability and we always say that. We are not against any state institution going about its lawful duty as enshrined in any enactment or the Constitution,” he said.
He added that enforcement agencies must ensure their actions remain within the law.
“What we are saying is that a state institution must be seen to be doing its work lawfully,” Afenyo-Markin said.
The confrontation occurred against the backdrop of the ongoing case involving Salomey Baffoe and social media personality Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known as “Ghana Jollof”.
Baffoe was arrested and subsequently remanded after being accused of helping Kodua publish and circulate false information through social media. She has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police have alleged that Baffoe assisted Kodua by recruiting others to redistribute videos published on the “Ghana Jollof” account. Investigators have also alleged financial transactions between the two women. Kodua, who is believed to be in the United Kingdom, has been declared wanted by the police.
Baffoe’s lawyers subsequently applied to the High Court for bail. Her hearing on Wednesday was adjourned after the prosecution sought additional time to file its response.
Baffour Awuah, who is leading her legal representation, was at the court when the reported EOCO operation occurred.
