Following a surge in Homowo-related clashes and tensions over chieftaincy disputes in Greater Accra, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak convened a high-level meeting with regional police commanders and the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of the Interior, aimed to devise immediate strategies to restore peace and prevent further violent incidents during the festival.
Mubarak urged the police to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to crime, stressing that disruptions linked to chieftaincy disputes or Homowo celebrations must be addressed firmly. “Crime must be treated as crime,” he asserted, calling for swift prosecutions to deter offenders.
He also emphasized strengthened collaboration between the police and traditional authorities to tackle the root causes of the violence, ensuring that communities remain safe throughout the festival period.
Registrar of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Enoch Addo, welcomed the move, reaffirming the chiefs’ commitment to peace and pledging close cooperation with law enforcement to mediate disputes and maintain harmony during and after Homowo festivities.
The intervention comes amid reports of confrontations in some neighborhoods during this year’s Homowo celebrations, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated security and traditional authority engagement to prevent further unrest.
