Emmanuel Okai Minta, former NDC Youth Organizer for the Eastern Region and current Board Chairman of the National Youth Authority, has paid tribute to the late Environment Minister, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, describing him as a man of integrity both as a private individual and a politician.
Speaking on Radio XYZ on Monday, August 11, Mr. Okai recalled his close relationship with Dr. Murtala, highlighting his boldness, honesty, and sense of humor. He emphasized that the late minister was fearless and always spoke truth to power without fear or favor.
“I’ve known Murtala for a long time. We lived in the same district and even attended the same law school. He was never selfish — during Sallah festivals, he’d invite me over for food. We’ve truly lost a rare and selfless gem. He was straightforward and bold, always honest with those in power,” Mr. Okai said.
He added that his last interaction with Dr. Murtala was just two weeks before the tragic crash, when he urged him, as sector minister, to attend an important program.
Mr. Okai expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying, “When I received news of the crash, I was overwhelmed with panic. The NDC has lost true gems, and Ghana has lost heroes. This is a devastating blow to our nation.”
The helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of eight prominent individuals, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
