President John Dramani Mahama has pledged that the long-abandoned Krofrom Market in Kumasi will be completed and fully functional by the end of 2026, ending years of neglect that have turned the facility into an eyesore and a security threat.
During a stop in Kumasi on Wednesday, July 16, as part of his Thank-You Tour of the Ashanti Region, President Mahama toured the stalled market site and assured residents that his administration is committed to reviving the project as part of a nationwide push to modernize market infrastructure.
The Krofrom Market, which began construction in 2007, has been left idle for years—its unfinished structures now serving as a haven for criminal activity and overgrown vegetation.
Traders in the area have long appealed for its completion, citing both safety concerns and the economic toll of limited market space.
President Mahama said the Krofrom facility will now be included in the NDC’s upcoming Market Enhancement Programme, a flagship initiative under which 18 key markets across the country are set for redevelopment.
He emphasized that revitalizing public market spaces is a top priority under his administration’s second term, and called on local authorities and stakeholders to work closely to fast-track progress.
“In our manifesto, we have something called the Market Enhancement Programme, in which we have picked 18 markets in Ghana that we are going to structure.
“So I have asked the Mayor to write to the Vice President and add Krofrom so that the project can be completed for good marketing. I believe that by the end of 2026, Krofrom Market will be completed,” President Mahama assured.
