Government has stepped in to assist traders affected by the devastating fire at Suame Post Office Market in Kumasi, donating GHS100,000 to support recovery efforts.
Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene delivered the donation on Wednesday evening, August 27, visiting the scene to offer comfort to victims.
He described the loss as “heartbreaking,” noting how the fire destroyed businesses built with years of hard work.
Dr. Amoakohene assured residents that the government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, remains committed to helping them through this crisis.
On behalf of the affected traders, Madam Mercy Oppong expressed gratitude for the government’s support and appealed for continued assistance when the market is rebuilt.
The fire, which erupted late on Tuesday, August 26, destroyed over 300 shops. The inferno was worsened by explosions from more than 30 gas cylinders, spreading rapidly through the market. The exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
Residents tried to salvage goods from nearby shops, but traders criticized the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for its delayed response, which allowed the fire to consume much of the market before help arrived.
Firefighters continue efforts to control the blaze. Although no injuries have been reported, the material losses are expected to amount to millions of cedis.
