A major fire outbreak has destroyed more than 100 stores at the Kasoa New Market in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.
The fire broke out at about 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2026, and burned for nearly five hours, fueled by highly combustible items such as cooking oils and hardware materials stored in the densely packed market.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), supported by eight fire tenders from the Central and Greater Accra regions, were deployed to contain the blaze.
However, their operations were hampered by unauthorized structures and poor access routes within the market, which delayed emergency response efforts.
No fatalities were recorded as a result of the fire itself.
The Ghana National Fire Service said the fire was eventually brought under control and that investigations are underway to determine its cause. As of the time of filing this report, the Service had not issued an official statement regarding the reported confrontations.
