The opposition New Patriotic Party has directed its members across the country to actively participate in the nationwide General Cleaning exercise scheduled for Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026.
The directive was issued in a statement by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on Wednesday, July 9, 2026.
According to the statement, the exercise forms part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation and promote civic responsibility following the declaration of National Cleaning Days by President John Dramani Mahama.
The NPP noted that although the party will be holding its constituency elections on Saturday, July 11, members are still expected to take part in the sanitation exercise after voting.
“In view of the party’s Constituency Elections on Saturday, July 11, 2026, members are encouraged to participate in the cleaning exercise immediately after casting their ballots, as voting is conducted on a walk-in basis.”
The party further called on members to use the exercise as an opportunity to contribute to national development and demonstrate their commitment to improving environmental conditions in their communities.
“The Party calls on all members to demonstrate their unwavering commitment to environmental sanitation, civic responsibility, and national development through their active participation.”
President John Dramani Mahama announced the institution of National Cleaning Days following the devastating floods that affected parts of the country in recent weeks, particularly in the Greater Accra Region and other flood-prone communities.
The floods resulted in loss of lives, displacement of residents and extensive damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure, prompting renewed calls for improved drainage systems, stricter enforcement against indiscriminate dumping of waste and sustained community participation in sanitation activities.
The National Cleaning Days initiative forms part of government efforts to improve environmental sanitation, desilt drains and reduce the impact of flooding during the rainy season.
