A fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) Mallam Substation has disrupted electricity supply to parts of Accra, following a transformer fault in the early hours of Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
According to GRIDCo, the incident occurred at 2:36 a.m. and affected one of the transformers at the substation, disrupting power supply to communities served by the facility.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the company said: “The Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) wishes to inform the public that a fault occurred at its Mallam Substation at 2:36 a.m. on Wednesday, 14th October 2026, resulting in a fire outbreak on one of the transformers at the station.”
The incident prompted a response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), which successfully contained and extinguished the fire.
GRIDCo confirmed that electricity supply had been restored to some affected areas, while technical teams continued working to reconnect the remaining communities.
“Power supply has been restored to parts of the affected areas, while efforts continue to restore supply to the remaining areas as quickly as possible,” the statement said.
The company did not identify the specific communities still experiencing outages or provide a definite timeline for the full restoration of electricity.
GRIDCo said its engineers had begun investigating the circumstances that led to the transformer fault and subsequent fire.
The company also indicated that steps were being taken to replace the damaged transformer to support efforts to restore normal operations at the substation.
The incident has disrupted electricity supply to parts of Accra that depend on the Mallam Substation, although GRIDCo says restoration efforts are ongoing.
The power transmission company apologised to customers and other stakeholders affected by the disruption, while thanking them for their patience as engineers work to resolve the situation.
“GRIDCo sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused and thanks all affected customers and stakeholders for their patience and understanding,” the statement added.
Residents in affected areas are expected to receive updates as work continues to restore electricity supply and address the damage caused by the fire.
