Three suspected cyber fraudsters have been arrested in the Volta Region for allegedly using fake social media profiles to pose as high-profile public officials, including the Speaker of Parliament and the Inspector-General of Police, to scam victims online.
The suspects—two men and a woman—were picked up by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following an intelligence-driven operation conducted in parts of Dabala, Sogakope, Dzodzent and Penyi.
Investigators say the group used the identities of well-known personalities to gain trust before carrying out multiple online fraud schemes.
Authorities believe the suspects were involved in a range of cybercrimes, including mobile money fraud, credit card scams, airtime fraud and deceptive online sales conducted through social media platforms.
All three are currently in police custody and are cooperating with investigators as efforts continue to trace additional victims and possible accomplices.
