Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called on the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities in Bawku to choose compromise and lasting peace following the submission of his mediation report to President John Dramani Mahama.
Presenting the final report at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the Asantehene highlighted the difficult concessions made during the mediation process, particularly by the Mamprugu traditional authority.
“The Nayiri has been clear in his mind that his decision to make concessions has been a difficult one but added that, nonetheless, guided by ancestral wisdom, commitment to peace and respect for your Majesty’s tireless efforts, I have chosen the path of conciliation not out of weakness but as a testament to Mamprugu’s strength, dignity and unwavering commitment to the well-being of all communities in the Bawku traditional area,” Otumfuo said.
He stressed that sustainable peace in Bawku can only be achieved through respect for the law and the authority of the courts, urging all factions to accept the current legal position on the chieftaincy dispute.
Otumfuo warned that “the government must enforce the laws and do stand with any person challenging the lawful authority of the Abagare Azorka,” underscoring the need for firm state action against attempts to undermine constitutionally recognised authority.
The mediation report traces the origins of the Bawku conflict to long-standing succession disputes between Mamprusi and Kusasi groups, shaped by colonial-era decisions and reinforced by decades of legal and political interventions.
According to the Asantehene, adherence to the constitution, existing laws and court rulings remains the most credible path to reconciliation, stability and enduring peace in Bawku.
