The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering Ghana’s security as instability deepens across parts of West Africa.
EU Ambassador to Ghana, Rune Skinnebach, said the bloc considers Ghana a stabilising anchor in the region, particularly as Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—now under military rule—move away from ECOWAS.
In an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the envoy disclosed that the EU has already supplied Ghana with military equipment, describing the move as “unusual” but necessary to strengthen its defence systems.
He explained that the EU is also working with Ghana on a dedicated **security and defence partnership** to complement ongoing cooperation frameworks.
“We want Ghana to remain not only an island of peace but also a stabilising factor with the Sahel region, which is characterised by a lot of instability from many actors, and not many of them are well-intended,” Mr. Skinnebach stressed.
The diplomat acknowledged the region’s complex challenges but said Ghana’s relative security continues to earn respect even from destabilising forces in neighbouring states—an advantage he described as part of the country’s “strategic luck.”
