Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has underscored the pivotal role of maritime security in safeguarding Ghana’s sovereignty, stressing that the nation’s territorial integrity cannot be secured without a strong and well-equipped Navy.
She made the remarks at this year’s Ghana Navy Memorial Day, observed annually on September 14 to honour personnel who laid down their lives in service to the Navy and the nation.
Paying tribute to the fallen heroes, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang praised the courage and sacrifices of Ghana’s naval forces while reaffirming government’s commitment to providing the resources needed to strengthen their resilience against emerging threats, including terrorism.
The 2025 edition holds special significance as it coincides with the 35th anniversary of the bombing of the Ghana Navy Ship Yogaga during peacekeeping operations in Liberia under ECOMOG, and the 11th year since the formal institution of Navy Memorial Day.
This year’s commemoration extends over four days, featuring activities designed to preserve the Navy’s history, foster patriotism, and honour the legacy of service and sacrifice that continues to define Ghana’s naval forces.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that beyond defending Ghana’s maritime borders, the Navy’s work also reinforces regional stability and contributes to international peace and security.
