National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault during the September 2 Akwatia by-election.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command confirmed in a statement that Azorka was picked up in Tamale on September 10 and granted bail after giving a caution statement.

He is scheduled to appear before court in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

The case stems from a confrontation at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area, where Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) third national vice-chairman, alleged he was attacked by Azorka while speaking to the media.

“I have been assigned to supervise and monitor the election at Akwatia Zongo. In fact, I was granting an interview when a national vice chairman of the NDC, Azorka because of ignorance comes straight to where I was granting an interview to attack me,” Masawudu recounted.

He further alleged that the incident unfolded in full view of police officers, claiming Azorka threatened to have him and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin caned on the spot.

Police say investigations are ongoing and have urged calm, assuring the public of due process.
